Toronto Film Review: ‘The Death and Life of John F. Donovan’

Hidden among more than 250 movies screening at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, there’s one — well-written, relatable, and wonderfully of-the-moment — in which a mom, fed up at last with her child’s unremitting narcissism, snaps, “Not everything’s about you,” adding that it’s Ok to be selfish in your 20s, but it stops being cute when you turn 30. Xavier Dolan’s “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan” is not that movie, although its director, who is 29, might benefit from seeing that other, better Toronto film, “The Weekend,” which contains the aforementioned scene, and whose central lesson he would do well to absorb: Maturity comes in realizing that you are not the center of the universe.
A work of stunning technique eclipsed by its increasingly jaw-dropping solipsism, “Death and Life” — or “How Deep Into Xavier Dolan’s Navel Dare We Gaze?” — may as well be preaching the

Spielberg Beats God as Most Thanked Person in Oscars History

One might assume that God would be the name to come up the most in Oscars acceptance speeches. That assumption would be very incorrect. God doesn't even crack the top five. Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, George Lucas and evenHarvey Weinstein have all been thanked more in Oscar speeches over the years than God has, according to an analysis of the numbers.
The Academy has archived more than 1,400 Oscar acceptance speeches over the years. An analysis of those speeches through 2015 revealed that Steven Spielberg is, by a pretty wide margin, the most mentioned individual when people accept their prize at the Academy Awards. The man behind Jaws, Schindler's List and many more Oscar-nominated flicks has been mentioned 42 times, according to the findings. Spielberg has not only directed a lot of actors to Oscars, but he's also produced quite a few projects as well. It's not terribly surprising that he came out on top.

Kathy Bates movies: 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘Misery,’ ‘Dolores Claiborne,’ ‘Primary Colors’

Kathy Bates was a 42-year-old stage actress when she was suddenly thrust into move stardom and an Oscar for her work in the film “Misery.” It was highly unusual for an actress with only limited film credits to take on a starring film role and win the industry’s highest honor but Bates accomplished just that.
Prior to “Misery,” Bates was a highly respected stage actress but when her acclaimed theater roles were adapted into film, she was never apart of the transfer. She did get to join the cast of the play “Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” when director Robert Altman filmed the play but in other cases she missed out. In the fall of 1986 Bates saw two of her stage characters adapted to the screen but she was a part of neither: “Crimes of the Heart” (replaced by Diane Keaton) and “night Mother
